I have read in Business Standard (BS Article) sometime back that Infosys has provided a new option to employees. First of this kind in Indian Industry, it gave alternates to employees to go on a sabbatical and work for NGO’s. Employees who finished 2 years in the company are qualified for the sabbatical.
Infosys also said that they will pay 50% salary and employee can also earn from the NGO’s they are working. If we really look into this option, One angle is salary cut while the other angle is the non-governmental organization (NGO) and Corporate Social Responsibility. In this global recession when everyone are talking about bankruptcy, recession etc. this is a welcome move by the company to keep faith of employees in the company.
I do not have idea about how the Labour Laws are in India. But, I think companies cant remove employees like how it is done in MNC's. I feel this might have forced companies to look at creative ways for reducing cost and work force. Corporate Social Responsibility is definitely a good thing. If its voluntary and left to employee to opt for it, then that is great. But if its in the wake of recession, it becomes cheap tactics to weed out people from the company.
In my opinion with respect to Infosys, Social responsibility might be the main reason though there is the cost savings factor. Or should we say its just coincidence in the difficult times ? I would be glad if many companies follow this suit. Atleast it would assure basic amneties with that 50% pay and people become really innovative working on Social causes when they are not required to think about earning the daily bread.
Well the factual reason remains unknown and remains within the room where its decided and is left to become history. What do you think is the actual reason ? cost cutting or social responsibility? and is it a good practice for other to follow ?
